Former three-time WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee has retired from in-ring competition
according to WWE officials.
Unfortunately that's about all we know at this point. The 28-year-old
wife of newly-signed UFC fighter CM Punk lost her Divas title to Nikki
Bella last November, then was out three-months with a back injury. She
made her return to the ring last month in a storyline with Paige and the
two teamed up to defeat the Bella Twins at WrestleMania 31 this past
Sunday night.
Lee sent out a series of Tweets back in February saying,
“Your female wrestlers have record selling merchandise &
have starred in the highest rated segment of the show several times,
and yet they receive a fraction of the wages & screen time of the
majority of the male roster.”
Whether or not money and screen time factored into the Diva's decision
to retire is not known at this time. Maybe she'll take up MMA like her
husband, whaddaya think, would you like to see that? She's still young
enough to pursue most anything she wants and if Punk can do it at 36,
why not? The 5'2" Lee is billed at 115 pounds, so she'd likely compete
at strawweight or even lower if she did make the move to MM
