Earlier this week a source close to Cahill said the 30-year-old considered himself to be "at the crossroads of his career".
The news came as a shock, given Cahill only signed a new long-term contract last month.
Having been displaced by Kurt Zouma under new boss Hiddink, the England international was apparently worried about losing his place in Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of Euro 2016.
