POLISI WAZUIA MAANDAMANO YA UKAWA HUKO SINGIDA
Police
in Singida Region have banned demonstration which was organised by
members of political parties forming the Coalition of Peoples’
Constitution (Ukawa) protesting results issued by the National Electoral
Commission (NEC).
The demo was to take part on November 3, this year in the region.
Regional Police Commander, Thobias Sedoyeka told reporters that
members of Ukawa were planning to demonstrate to press NEC nullify the
election results and declare their presidential candidate Edward Lowassa
as the winner of the General Election held on October 25, this year.
RPC Sedoyeka described the planned demo as illegal.
“I urge leaders of the opposition parties to discourage their
members from participating in the illegal demo instead they should find
better legal ways of getting their justice.”
“Our investigation shows that the planned demo was to involve people from different backgrounds including the youth.”
According to Sedoyeka, the protesters were planning to move around
Singida Municipality, though their starting point and destination
weren’t established.
He however used the platform to discourage the youth not to take in
the planned demo and instead they should continue with their productive
activities.
Regional chairman of Chadema, Shabani Limu confirmed to have
received the directive from the higher authorities, though police
remained a stumbling block, when it comes to allowing them to carry-out
the demo.
“It is true; we received the directive from the party’s higher
authorities that we should organise a countrywide demo to protest
against the election results for the presidential candidate.
“We informed police on our intention so that we get permission but yesterday morning police banned the demo.”
Limu wondered as why they refused to allow them to stage the
demostration, despite the fact that the demo was expected to be
peaceful.
